Heart Series Conclusion

It feels like just yesterday I began posting various Scriptures that talk about the heart. This series has gone on for 4 weeks now though and it's time for the final post on the heart series devotions.

I hope these devotions have helped you to understand more, and grow in the knowledge of God's ways.

In conclusion with this series I will post some of the things Jesus Himself said on the heart. I've included Scriptures this time as well as a prayer to receive Christ at the end of this post. I pray that the Lord will enlighten the eyes of your heart (Ephesians 1:18) as you read the Scriptures below. He is faithful to teach and show what you need to see.

Scriptures

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Matthew 5:8

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:21

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:29

“Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. Mark 11:23

But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.  Luke 8:15

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. John 14:1

God Sees Our Hearts

Please remember though, that our heart is another way of addressing our deep, inner-man. God sees this part of us better than anyone else can. He fashioned our hearts and created our hearts to be in fellowship with Him. This is only possible through His Son Jesus Christ.

If you've never asked Jesus to cleanse your heart and dwell in there forever, you can take that step today. All you need is to ask Jesus to forgive you of your sins, cleanse your heart, dwell inside of you and believe His sacrifice on the Cross.

Prayer

Lord God,
I am so sorry for living my life apart from You. I've not followed You with my whole heart, nor have I loved You the way that You created me too. I am deeply sorry and I humbly repent.
Thank You Lord God, for sending Your Son Jesus Christ to live, die and rise again for me. Because of His sacrifice I can be made new. I turn to You and believe in what Jesus has done and that He is Your Son, my Lord and Savior.
Please Jesus, come live and dwell in me forever. Guide me, show me the path I am to take and please bestow upon me a new heart that is sensitive to You, the Light of Life and Truth.
I pray this and I ask this in Jesus' Name,
Amen

That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9

If you prayed that prayer, and truly meant it, you are now made new in Christ. I encourage you to tell someone about your decision and to find a Bible believing church where you can continue to learn and grow in Christ! That prayer you prayed is really just the beginning of a brand new life!

Please feel free to email me to let me know if you prayed that prayer. I would love to chat with you and pray for you!

Heart Series Devotions-Post Three

A Heart Transformed

We're almost through with our Heart Series Devotions. I'm amazed at just how much God's Word talks about our hearts too! After delving into this topic more, I realize just how much I still can learn.

Before I dive into the Scriptures I want to take the time to review what we've learned already.

1. Our hearts are extremely important to God. We are told to love God with all of our hearts numerous times throughout the Bible.

2. The heart is the center of our being. It was designed by God and made for God.

3. The Hebrew word for heart, lêb, is defined as the thoughts, feelings, will, desire intellect and center.

4. The heart can be led astray though if not carefully guarded from other lusts, temptations and deception.

For more Scriptures on the truths presented in the review I encourage you to read or re-read the past heart series devotions posts.

You and I know now that the heart can be fickle. As hard as I try sometimes I still am led astray. We all can be led astray easily without God's guidance. Thankfully though by constantly renewing our minds with God's truth we also can renew our hearts. Likewise we can find contentment, joy and peace by having a renewed heart. However in order to have a heart that is receptive to God and His ways, and one that will be able to have communion with the Lord, we need a completely new heart. A heart transformation. This is not something we can do on our own either. It has to be done by Someone else.

Heart Scriptures

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.
And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. Romans 5:1-5

And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart. Ezekiel 36:26 (NLT)

Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir. Galatians 4:6-7

Questions to Ponder

What is one of the characteristics of a heart that has not been transformed?

What is one of the characteristics of a heart that has been transformed?

Since we are justified by faith in Christ, Who is it that ultimately gives us a new heart?

Philippians 4:13

I'm grateful that this heart transformation helps me to be more receptive to the Lord's voice and will help when I do feel led astray. Even with a transformed heart we need to renew our minds in God's Word and be diligent to make sure that we are following God with our whole heart. But in the end, it's not anything that we've done that gives us victory. It's what Christ has done for us and continues to do in us that brings contentment, joy, peace and victory.

I can do all things through Him (Christ) Who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13

Heart Series Devotions-Post Two

Saturday, January 12, 2013

Welcome back to the second post of the heart series devotions! The Bible has so much to say about our hearts, the center of our being, and the Scriptures I post here are by no means an exhaustive list. My prayer is that as you read the verses in each post, you will turn back to the Bible and seek an even deeper understanding with the Lord as your Teacher.

In the last heart series post we see how important our hearts are to God. He wants us to love Him, serve Him and seek Him with all of our hearts. We also saw that our hearts mean the center of our being. It includes the thoughts, feelings, intellect and desires; and yet our hearts are not perfect. The Scriptures that are posted today highlight this truth.

Heart Scriptures
Yet Pharaoh’s heart became hard and he would not listen to them, just as the Lord had said.
Exodus 7:13

When Pharaoh saw that the rain and hail and thunder ceased, he sinned again: both he and his servants hardened their hearts. Exodus 9:34
As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his father had been. 1 Kings 11:4

Arrogant people smear my reputation with lies, but I observe your precepts with all my heart.
Their hearts are calloused, but I find delight in your law. Psalm 119:69-70

There is deceit in the hearts of those who plot evil, but joy for those who promote peace. Proverbs 12:20

Questions to Ponder

1. What do you think are the characteristics of a hard heart?
2. What may a heart not fully devoted to the Lord be prone to do?
3. If our hearts are not perfect and can be full of deceit, do you think it's wise to "follow your heart?"
4. What are some things we can do that will help us to keep our hearts right with God?

Let our prayer today reflect the prayer of the psalmist who cried: Test me, O Lord, and try me, examine my heart and my mind; Psalm 26:2

May you be blessed by the Lord and keep your heart soft and sensitive to His voice.

Heart Series Devotions- Post One

Saturday, January 5, 2013

The Heart Series will be a series of posts that will include verses  for you to meditate on and questions for you pray about. In short it will be a sort of devotional type series.

Originally I had prepared a series of posts that would be a broad teaching on what the Bible says about the heart, however after thinking over it a little longer and writing some more I've decided to leave the teaching to the Lord. I will post verses that contain the word heart and pose some questions to go along with them. I may even post some helpful information to go along with the Scriptures posted. I hope and pray that this will be beneficial to you and that you will prayerfully go back into the Bible and read each verse in context. God is faithful to teach and guide each one of us.

Our Hearts are important to God

God exhorts His people many times to love Him with their whole heart, seek Him with their whole heart and follow Him with their whole heart.

Since the Bible was written originally in Hebrew (the Old Testament) and Greek (the New Testament) I thought it would be important to look at the meaning of the word heart in its original language. The Hebrew word lêb (also used as lêbâb), which translated in the English language means heart, is a broad definition for the thoughts, feelings, will, desires and intellect. It means the centre of anything. (source: http://studybible.info/strongs/H3820) The Greek word for heart, kardia, likewise means the thoughts, feelings, or middle. So with this in mind, let's take a look at some of the beautiful Scriptures that talk about our hearts.

Heart Scriptures

But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find him if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul. Deuteronomy 4:29

And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, Deuteronomy 10:12
Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Deuteronomy 11:18

But be very careful to keep the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you: to love the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to obey his commands, to hold fast to him and to serve him with all your heart and all your soul.” Joshua 22:5

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:11-13
Questions to Ponder

1. What do you think seeking the Lord with all of your heart looks like?

2. How would you bind God's Word on your heart?

3. What does it mean to guard your heart?

I would like to share a very helpful definition of the heart from BlueletterBible.com
"The heart denotes the centre of all physical and spiritual life."
