A Great Debate!

Saturday, February 8, 2014

Did you miss one of the great debates that took place this past Tuesday? For weeks I kept hearing about the upcoming debate between well know scientist Bill Nye (aka Bill Nye the Science Guy) and one of my absolute favorite Intelligent Design/Creationist advocates Ken Ham. (Ken and his colleagues got me through my college astronomy course about a year ago! I highly recommend you watch their teachings over at www.answersingenesis.org) The responses to this debate have been varied and numerous.

While I was able to tune in for some of it though I unfortunately did not finish viewing the whole thing. Thankfully it is now available via Youtube! I highly recommend you watch at least some of the debate. I know I plan on viewing some of the parts that I missed from this past Tuesday.

Also be sure to check out this great article posted at Visionary Womanhood where Natalie tackles some of the underlying issues surrounding the debate. Her grace and truth shine through in her blog post.

Don't just watch the debate though. There were loads of things that were not addressed in the discussion above but you can find answered at the website Answers in Genesis. Again I highly recommend you check out this amazing ministry!

A big thanks to Bill Nye and Ken Ham for participating in this event!

Vermont's Breathtaking Beauty

Tuesday, August 13, 2013

Last week I went on a mini-vacation with family and friends to the rustic state of Vermont! My family and I are blessed to have friends who have a home there and every year in the summer time we try like to take our annual vacation in the mountains of Quechee. I had such a fun time going shopping in historic Woodstock and Vermont's largest antique store! There was even this quaint new country store near the Quechee Gorge that I went to twice on one day; it was just that sweet!

On the very last day of our vacation we hiked down the Quechee Gorge where I was once again amazed at God's creation. I snapped a few photos to share and thought that the beautiful hymn "How Great Thou Art" captures the essence of these photos perfectly.

 O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

 When through the woods, and forest glades I wander,
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees.
When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur
And see the brook, and feel the gentle breeze.

 Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

If you're ever in the vicinity of New England, I highly recommend you stop by Vermont! The beauty is truly breathtaking.

Finding God Outside My Window

Lessons From Creation

Spring blooms outside my window and the buds on the trees begin to sprout. Dandelions cover the grass and the flowery scents tickle my nose. Tulips, Dogwood trees, Rhododendron's and potted Pansies all make an appearance after a long winter's sleep. I once again am awestruck at the beauty of God's creation. What once seemed dead, lifeless, is now bursting with vibrancy, color and life. I never worry about the flowers not blooming come Spring time, or fear that the vegetation not grow... it just does. Every year at the same time Spring returns. The lessons displayed in all of creation never cease to bring me closer to the Lord.

For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead;
Romans 1:20a

The Psalms paint a glorious picture of God's creation obeying His eternal power and thus bringing praise to our Creator.

Let the sea resound, and everything in it,
    the world, and all who live in it.
 Let the rivers clap their hands,
    let the mountains sing together for joy;
Psalm 98:7-8

Imagine the sound of the rivers flowing freely as clapping their hands in honor of their King and the mountains singing in awe of His beauty. I can't help but think of Julie Andrews as Maria von Trapp in the the classic movie "The Sound of Music" singing those beautiful words: The hills are alive with the sound of music.

Ever since Adam and Eve, humans have been awestruck with the beauty of nature. Both believers and unbelievers alike seem drawn to the beauty of God's creation. Why is this?

Surrender
I'm reminded of the words by Andrew Murray who was addressing the topic of absolute surrender to God.

"God has created the sun, and the moon, and the stars, and the flowers, and the trees, and the grass; and are they not all absolutely surrendered to God? Do they not allow God to work in them just what He pleases? When God clothes the lily with its beauty, is it not yielded up, surrendered, given over to God as He works in its beauty? And God’s redeemed children, oh, can you think that God can work His work if there is only half or a part of them surrendered? God cannot do it. God is life, and love, and blessing, and power, and infinite beauty, and God delights to communicate Himself to every child who is prepared to receive Him; but ah! this one lack of absolute surrender is just the thing that hinders God. And now He comes, and as God, He claims it."

The absolute surrender of God's creation allows God to show Himself through it and likewise make it into His own. I believe the same is true for us.

May the God of heaven and earth teach you, guide you and show you His beautiful creation this Spring!

The Wonders of God's Creation

Wednesday, February 20, 2013

Oh the wonders of God's creation! The beauty of His artistry. It never ceases to amaze me how a sunset bursting with color gives us glimpses of His majesty. (I love adding Scriptures to photos of God's creation too.) Just the other day, as I was driving to work, I saw a flock of Canadian geese form the classic flying V as they migrated to warmer climates. The geese were set against the backdrop of the rising sun. This picture resonated with my spirit and once again revealed God's majesty, beauty and holiness. It was truly awe inspiring.

God cares for His creation.

"Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows."
Matthew 10:29-31

All of creation declares God's majesty!

The heavens declare the glory of God;
And the firmament shows His handiwork.

Day unto day utters speech,
And night unto night reveals knowledge.
Psalm 19:1-2

For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead,
Romans 1:20a

I, like the psalmist, am awestruck that our God would care for us the way He does when I consider the works of His hands.

When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The moon and the stars, which You have ordained,

What is man that You are mindful of him,
And the son of man that You visit him?

Psalm 8:3-4

Worship the Lord for His beautiful creation and look with wonder at the beauty of His work.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 1:1

Here is a wonderful video that captures some of God's amazing creation.
